First off, congratulations on the show's success and on your performance on the show. Both have been highly acclaimed. It must be a great experience being associated with such good material.

Yea, I'm really pleased for everybody. If nothing else, this nomination thing, as un-quantifiable as measuring talent is, at least shows that the show is working on some level. It's encouraging.

When we spoke last, in the beginning of the show's run, you were nervous about talking about the great relationship the cast seemed to share because you didn't want to jinx it. As you enter the show's third season, have you found that it has lasted?

Well, it's all gone to hell. I don't like any of them. We're all out for ourselves. But we're professionals, so we're making it work...{laughs}. That was a joke. I hope you could tell by my tone...

Yes, I got it {laughs}.

But yea, I think we're all anxious to preserve that. It's just a crappy place to go to work if you all don't get along. So far so good. We're together a lot. I guess the biggest problem for me would be if me and Martha didn't get along because we have to play husband and wife, so I'm very glad we do. I really treasure her and her input. It's nice to have someone opposite you that you trust so much.

Have they told you anything about what's in store for Season 3?

No, they don't run stuff by us like that. We'll know more once the season starts. They'll start bouncing off ideas. But during hiatus, everyone just sort of disappears into their own little world of recovery. I don't really know what will happen. I guess a lot. I'm not sure if I'm right, but just the fact that the girls are going to be three in February, they're walking and talking so that opens up a whole new thing. They have a lot to wrangle. There's a lot of changes constantly happening, like in your life if you have a kid. So they have to accommodate that and maintain the tone of the show and the humor. So it's a big job.

Tell me how much fun it is playing the character of Burt Chance.

It is. It's a lot of fun for me. I feel like I picked a good one when we were looking for something comedic to break up the Heavy Drama stuff, and I couldn't ask for a better one. There's a lot of physical comedy, which I like. There's behavioral comedy. There's verbal comedy. It's challenging on a lot of levels. I love the single-camera format.  And I love Greg Garcia. He's just a great showrunner. He sets the tone from The Topdown. It's a good place to go to work.

You have been nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, along with Martha Plimpton for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. It's kind of a cool designation don't you think...to be recognized by the people who's job it is to critique your performance?

Yea, I gotta say that you all have been very good to us from the get-go.  There's never any project or performance that everyone universally loves. You know what I mean? You can always find someone who hated The Godfather, or who thinks Marlon Brando is a horrible actor.  So you're never going to please everyone. But the amount of critical praise we've received since we started this show has really been wonderful...and appreciated. So yea, in a way, these are very cool awards. I love how shows like Community, or our show that aren't necessarily massive, massive hits are still recognized for The Good work they're doing.

Let's talk about your latest film project, Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave." This sounds like some heavy stuff here Garret. You're getting back into the drama {laughs}. Can you give us the premise for the film and what you're role is?

I think so. I may be a little bit vague because No One has spoken to me about what I can talk about and what I can't, and I don't want to step on toes. It's based on a true story that is out there.  It's the story of Solomon Northup who is a free black Man Living in Mass. in I believe, who is sort of Shanghai'd and sold into slavery in the Civil War-era South. He didn't get back home for 12 years. It's a harrowing story and all the more harrowing story because it's true. It's an amazing time isn't it, in our history?

Yes. And this sounds like a difficult story to tell and a difficult story to watch unfold.

Yea, but it's not uninspiring. It's a tragic turn of events, but it's not necessarily a tragic story. There's a lot of strength and pride in it, and theres' some incredible characters in there that he meets. There were a lot of poor white people as well in the South like sharecroppers and white people who picked cotton, and I am one of those.

So what else are you working on?

I just finished up a project called The Scribbler. It's based on a graphic novel and it's sort of science fiction-y, very Brazil. I have a huge beard and a shaved head. I've had a great time other than the night shoot.  That is the great thing about Raising Hope. We shoot 22 episodes and that's sort of done and we have a lengthy hiatus...about 5 months. That gives me time to explore other types of projects and I try to do, again, something different from Raising Hope to stay busy and stay challenged.

I've got Tall Hot Blonde (2012) coming up here soon later on this month on Lifetime that Courtney Cox directed. That's a very different character than Burt Chance. I had a great time on that and working with her.

Then I'll finish up with 12 Years a Slave (2013) and this other movie called Along the Highways with Julia Stiles. That'll take me right into Raising Hope, so it will be a perfectly orchestrated summer as far as I'm concerned.

I know that you're an avid reader. Have you read any good books lately?

I do read some stuff on set. I like so many different kinds of things. I've been reading Christopher Hitchens' essays if I want some non-fiction stuff. I also like fantasy stuff, so I've been reading Brandon Sanderson. I really like him. I also love Michael Ondaatje. One of my favorite books of his was Divisidero. He has a new one called The Cat's Table which I just started. He wrote this great book back in the day called The Collected Works of Billy the Kid. It sold me on him for so long. I love Westerns.

So what message would you like to give to Raising Hope fans as they anxiously await the start of Season 3?

Thanks for watching and tell a million of your friends.
